String Codes & Published Tensions

Find item codes, strings, instruments and published tensions together in one chart. Filter by instrument or range, search for a particular item, and switch between N, kgf and lbf.

Check the range and version as well as the item code. Some codes appear in more than one generation. Older Brilliant tensions have not been assigned to Brilliant 2.0. “Not verified” means that a matching published figure has not been confirmed; it does not mean zero tension.

How to read the chart

Reference length: published violin figures use 326 mm, viola Medium 370 mm, viola Long 390 mm and cello 690 mm, at A = 440 Hz. The Beast figures use the 327 mm reference stated on its product page.

Compare matching versions, pitches and reference lengths. Set totals are retained as published rather than recalculated. This chart does not cover every fractional, fitting or specialist-tailpiece variation.

Units: N means newtons; kgf means kilogram-force; lbf means pound-force. Conversions use 1 kgf = 9.80665 N and 1 lbf = 4.448221615 N.

Pegbox winding colours, all instruments: I yellow · II blue · III green · IV red.

Source notes and product updates

Main reference: Warchal’s published tension chart . Current product codes and The Beast supplement are drawn from Warchal’s product pages.

Brilliant 2.0: current codes are listed separately from original Brilliant reference values. Matching tensions have not been verified for this generation as yet.

Karneol: current universal E codes 500 U and 501 U are separate from the older ball-end reference entries.

Discontinued ranges: Brilliant cello is discontinued. Brilliant Vintage is being discontinued at the end of 2026. Their reference rows appear only when historical data is selected.

Ametyst: the figures shown are for full-size violin strings. Ametyst fractional strings are being discontinued; Brilliant fractional strings are the replacement range.

Amber cello: the metal A is supplied straight from October 2026. Figures shown remain the published values.

Confirm size, generation, fittings and availability before ordering. A listed reference code does not confirm current stock.

String tension numbers aren’t apples-to-apples

Brands publish tension using different units and at different vibrating string lengths (VSL), so cross-brand charts don’t always compare directly:
